Is Actimel the Same as Yakult?

No, Actimel and Yakult are not the same, although both fall into the category of probiotic beverages.

Yakult originated in Japan in the 1930s. It contains a specific strain of bacteria called Lactobacillus casei Shirota named after the scientist who developed it. A mixture of skimmed milk and sugar is fermented with the bacteria resulting in a drink that is rich in live cultures.

Actimel originated in Belgium in the 1990s. It contains Lactobacillus casei Defensis, a unique strain of bacteria, along with other Lactobacillus strains. To prepare this, flavored and sweetened milk is fermented with these bacterial strains.

Which One Tastes Better: Yakult or Actimel?

I have tried almost all flavors and variations of Yakult and Actimel and if we talk only taste, I did like them.

Yakult has a slightly sweet and tangy taste with a creamy texture. The pleasant taste makes it easy to consume.

Actimel is also quite sweet and has a yogurt-like consistency and flavor. Like yakult. It is available in different flavors and sweeteners to enhance its taste.

What is The Daily Recommended Quantity or Yakult Vs Actimel

You can consume both Yakult and Actimel  in moderation and drinking about 1 bottle a day should be fine.

However, as a  nutritionist, I generally do not recommend consuming these everyday because of the high sugar levels. Instead opt for other probiotic drinks like unflavoured kefir, buttermilk, yogurt, etc.

Higher Calorie Count: Actimel Drink vs Yakult?

If we talk about calories, comparing the original versions of the drink, Actimel typically contains a slightly higher calorie content.

In both the products, the main source of these calories is the sugar in the products followed by the milk.

Can You Drink Yakult and Actimel On A Low Carb Diet Or If Trying to Lose Weight?

Both Yakult and Actimel are high in carbs when compared to other probiotic foods like buttermilk, yogurt. So, although they can be incorporated into a low carb diet or a weight loss plan, I generally advise limiting them.

If you are on a low carb diet or limiting calories, I would suggest prioritizing, nutrient-dense foods that also have gut health benefits.

Which is A Low Fat Beverage – Yakult or Actimel?

Yakult is practically fat free since it’s made from skimmed milk.

On the other hand, Actimel does contain fat. However, it is still considered a low-fat beverage, with the fat content being relatively modest, especially in comparison to other dairy-based products.

Better Suited For Meeting Protein Needs – Yakult or Actimel?

Although both Yakult and Actimel are dairy based, they are not significant sources of protein. Although comparatively, actimel has a higher protein content.

If you’re looking to meet your protein needs, you can include other protein-rich foods such dairy products, legumes, nuts, etc.

A Better Source of Dietary Calcium – Yakult or Actimel?

Actimel has a higher calcium content and thus is a better option for meeting your calcium needs.

Yakult does contain a small amount of calcium but not enough to make it a primary calcium source. To increase your intake, try incorporating calcium-rich foods and beverages like yogurt, milk, cheese, or fortified plant-based milk alternatives.

Which is More Nutritionally Rich– Yakult or Actimel?

Between yakult and actimel, Actimel is more nutritionally rich. Apart from calcium and small quantities of protein, Actimel also has added Vitamins D & B6.

Yakult does contain some nutrients like  Vitamins D & E, calcium & potassium., but in very small quantities.

What is the Best Time to Consume Yakult Or Actimel?

Ideally I would suggest consuming Yakult or Actimel in the mid morning or noon. Although a lot of people recommend consuming it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, I would  advise against it because of the sugar content.

Eat it like a snack in the afternoon, with or between meals so that it helps in aiding digestion. Also, if you are wondering can you take yakult and actimel together, the answer is yes. But be mindful of the sugar intake.

Are Yakult and Actimel Environmentally Sustainable?

One of the major problems with Yakult and Actimel is the use of plastics for packaging. Although they have started using recyclable plastic, plastic pollution is still a cause of concern.

Also, since they are dairy products, there are additional concerns about release of greenhouse gasses and use of resources

Which One Has Vegan Options – Yakult or Actimel?

Yakult and Actimel are made from dairy-based ingredients. This makes them unsuitable for those following a strict vegan diet.

If you’re looking for a vegan alternative to probiotic drinks like Yakult and Actimel, you can consider beverages like kvass, water kefir, kombucha, etc.

Yakult or Actimel – More Suited To Maintain Strong Bones and Teeth?

Between the two drinks, Actimel is more suited to maintain strong bones and teeth. This is because of the higher calcium  Calcium is required for maintaining strong bones and teeth.

With respect to oral health, an additional point you need to consider is the amount of sugar. Rinse your mouth properly after consuming any of these.

Is Yakult or Actimel Better for Probiotic & Gut Support?

Both Yakult and Actimel are specifically created to support digestion. The probiotics or  beneficial bacteria that, when consumed in adequate amounts, can positively impact the gut microbiome that helps support immunity and gut health.

Yakult has one strain in a high concentration (6.5 billion or more). Actimel has a lesser concentration (10 million) but is more diverse and contains at least three different bacterial strains. The effectiveness can vary from one person but overall they are both beneficial.

Which One Has Lesser Allergens – Yakult or Actimel Drink?

Both Yakult and Actimel drinks contain common allergens related to milk like lactose. So if you have a milk allergy or are lactose intolerant, I would suggest avoiding them.

If your intolerance is very mild and you want to try them out, you can start small. Consume around half or one fourth of the regular serving. So essentially, around half a bottle.

Which One’s More Versatile – Yakult or Actimel?

When it comes to versatility, both actimel and yakult have limited uses. I generally as a smoothie ingredient, or mixed with other foods or drinks.

If you do have suggestions for me on how to use these drinks, I am excited to learn more.

Which is More Accessible & Budget Friendly: Yakult or Actimel

Yakult trumps actimel in both availability and price. Yakult has been extensively marketed throughout the world and you’ll find them in most countries from Vietnam in South East Asia to Brazil in South America.

Actimel is not as widely available as yakult and tends to be more expensive. However, prices may vary based on location, and regions.

In conclusion, I would say that both yakult and actimel have their own advantages. While one product may work for you, but it may not work for someone else.

So, both are worth a try and can be consumed occasionally.
