Cheapest Plant Milk to Make | 9 Frugal Options

Making a cost effective and nutritious plant milk requires you to choose the best ingredients. Let’s take a look at the best options you have

1. Peanut Milk

Peanuts are sometimes referred to as “poor man’s nut.” They are a cheap source of protein and fibre and are easily available across cities and towns.

Peanut milk is an excellent non-dairy milk alternative that is high in its nutritional value. It contains minerals and vitamins such as magnesium,  Vitamin E & E along with proteins. It also works as a great substitute for dairy milk in recipes.

2. Soy Milk

Unlike many others in its category, soy milk is not something new and has been around for quite some time. Soymilk is high in protein and a decent dairy-free option for lactose intolerants.

Soy milk is versatile in its usage and can be used for cooking, baking or even drinking straight up. Since soybeans are relatively inexpensive, you can make economical soy milk at home with just two ingredients – soybeans and water.

3. Pea Milk

This has become one of my favourite non dairy milk. As a nutritionist, this is also my most recommended one. Pea milk boasts of as much protein as dairy milk and is thus very nutritionally similar. It is also rich in fibre.

Pea milk can be made at home easily and can be used as a dairy replacement in cooking and baking as well. The only downside is that you have to add some kind of oil while preparing it at home.

4. Oat Milk

Oat milk is one of the cheapest vegan milk that you can prepare at home. It is also suited for people who have dairy, soy or nut allergies. Oat milk is rich in fibre which is associated with lowering cholesterol.

Another great thing about oat milk is that since it has a creamy consistency and a very mild taste, it can be used in both savory and sweet recipes. Add it to your cereal, smoothies, soups and curries.

5. Banana Milk

The humble banana is not only pocket-friendly but also a source of nutrients. It is rich in nutrients like potassium and fibre.

Banana milk is a simple combination of bananas and water. It is easy to make at home and suitable for people with dairy, nut and soy allergies. It also goes really well with cereal or oatmeal, and smoothies.

6. Coconut Milk

Probably amongst the most delicious, coconut milk is another pocket-friendly plant milk that can be easily made at home. All you need is coconut meat and water.

It has a pleasant sweet and creamy flavour and goes very well in sweet and savoury dishes. I like it in soups, smoothies, puddings and curries.

7. Rice Milk

Another nominal option for plant milk is one using rice milk. RIce milk is very allergy friendly and easy to make. You can make it with cooked or raw rice both without having to add any other fancy ingredients.

Rice milk has a slightly sweet sweet taste which makes it an ideal choice for desserts. You can also add it to your smoothies, granola, or make it a base for your soups.

8. Corn Milk

The sweet corn cob is delicious to eat, but did you know you can also make a delicious sweet drink out of it. It is a popular drink in many parts of the world including China, Japan, Vietnam, etc.

Corn milk made at home is light and thin in consistency. It has a hint of sweetness and can be used as a base for soups, stews or can be used in dessert recipes.

9. Ragi/ Finger Millet Milk

Another one of my favourites and yet cost effective non dairy milk is Ragi milk. It is made using Ragi or finger millet and is rich in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fibre and the milk derived from it inherits these nutrients.

Finger millet milk is an excellent gluten-free, nut-free and dairy free option. You can make it at home easily and drink it as such or add it to your cereal or recipes.
